Whitworth book review

I managed to pick up a copy of TA Whitworth’s A History of Sequence Dancing & Script List on E bay (for 60p). It is well worth a read, and there are still many bargains to be had on E-bay with many booksellers selling this book at knock-down prices (although someone in the US was trying to sell a copy for £75 ! – a tadge optimistic I think). There is a very good script list (from 1850 – 1995), which looks fairly comprehensive (no actual scripts of course) and lots of historical narrative and mini-biographies (emphasis on mini) of significant people (such as F.J. Mainey, Walter Whitman, Cecil Rault, Rita Pover, Bill Botham, Ken Fuller, to name but a few). It tends to focus on the earlier years, with lots of information on the history of the local MC’s associations and the dances they released. Relatively little on the post-75 period and some very significant omissions in terms of people and biographies, but still well worth a read.
